Our Family Literacy program will facilitate English Language Acquisition and Literacy Skills development in context of learning about the importance of early childhood education. To increase the success of our largest growing youth population, Smart Start and BRLC will utilize a nationally-recognized evidenced-based curriculum developed specifically for the Latino community: Abriendo Puertas / Opening Doors.

The mission of Opening Doors is to “support parents in their roles as family leaders and as their child’s first and most influential teacher in a home that is their child's first school.” Opening Doors' two-generation approach builds parent leadership skills and knowledge to promote family well-being and positive education outcomes for children.

This program is focused on advancing the education of two generations within an underserved population. Its impact will be seen  immediately with the adult population served and in the future as the youth prepare for kindergarten. Together, Smart Start and BRLC will combat the statistic that children of parents with low literacy skills have a 72 percent chance of being at the lowest reading levels themselves.
